The Power of the Gospel
INTRODUCTION: We begin our journey through Romans by anchoring ourselves in Paul’s powerful declaration: "I am not ashamed of the gospel." The gospel is not just good advice; it is God’s POWER to save, to redeem, and to transform. This message isn't limited to one group; it is for “everyone that believeth.” It is the foundation of Christian life and the wellspring of our hope.
These two verses serve as the THESIS STATEMENT for the entire book of Romans and center on the POWER and PURPOSE of the Gospel. Let’s break down each part and examine how it reveals the POWER of the Gospel to change lives, reveal righteousness, and compel us to live by FAITH.
I. THE GOSPEL IS GOD’S POWER TO SAVE
a. The GOSPEL is the good news of Jesus Christ's life, death, and resurrection.
b. However, it is not just a MESSAGE, but a DIVINE FORCE.
c. It is how GOD rescues humanity from SIN, restores BROKEN FELLOWSHIP, and grants ETERNAL LIFE.
i. Romans 1:16 “…it is the POWER of God unto salvation to every one that believeth…”
I. THE GOSPEL REVEALS THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD
a. This emphasizes that the GOSPEL not only SAVES, it REVEALS God's character and His way of making
sinners right with Him.
b. The RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD refers to more than just His MORAL PERFECTION; it includes His
FAITHFULNESS, JUSTICE, and the divine method by which He justifies the ungodly through faith in Christ.
i. Romans 1:17 “For therein is the righteousness of God revealed…”
I. THE GOSPEL CALLS US TO LIVE BY FAITH
a. The GOSPEL is not only how we are SAVED, but also the FOUNDATION for how we continue to LIVE.
