Life in the Spirit

INTRODUCTION: Romans 8 is often called “the greatest chapter in the Bible.” It begins with no condemnation and ends with no separation, and in between, it teaches us how to live in the Spirit. This week in our Rooted in Romans series, we discover what it means to walk in the Spirit, to be led by the Spirit, and to live as children of God. The Holy Spirit is not a mystical force, but the living presence of God within the believer, empowering us to live a new life in Christ.

Kick-Off Analogy: Have you ever watched a bird glide effortlessly in the sky? It’s not flapping furiously, trying to stay aloft in its own strength; it spreads its wings and rides the invisible wind. That’s a picture of the Spirit-led life. You and I weren’t meant to live the Christian life by struggling in the flesh, but by depending on the Holy Spirit, who lifts, leads, and empowers us. As Paul shows in Romans 8, we are called to soar, no longer grounded by guilt or gripped by fear, but free, adopted, and empowered by the Spirit.

1. NO CONDEMNATION – THE SPIRIT FREES US FROM GUILT AND DEATH

a. Before Christ, we stood guilty under the law, condemned.

        i. Romans 8:1-2 “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus…”

b.  But now, in Christ, and by the Spirit, that condemnation is removed.

2. LED BY THE SPIRIT – THE SPIRIT GUIDES OUR STEPS DAILY

a. Being led by the Spirit isn’t a one-time decision; it’s a daily surrender.

          i. Romans 8:14 “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”

b.  The Spirit leads us in truth, wisdom, and righteousness.

3. ADOPTED BY THE SPIRIT – THE SPIRIT AFFIRMS OUR IDENTITY AND BELONGING

a. The Spirit doesn’t bring us into bondage but into belonging.

          i. Romans 8:15 “…ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.”

b.  “Abba” is an intimate word, like “Daddy”, showing closeness, love, and access.
